PANTS TUTORIAL
okay, i was going to make a hair tutorial with this doll, but i didn't save the layers for it, so that will come at another time. i hope.

just do me a favor and don't steal my lineart and my shading. the purpose of a tutorial is to teach someone else how to improve their OWN skills, if you just steal mine, what have you learned?

base for this tutorial by hollay.

1. Start with the lineart for the pants, Be sure to include your pockets, the flap over the zipper, the waistline (where the button goes), and the folds around the crotch area, the knees and the ankles.

For this doll, I knew I wanted her shoes to be sticking out, so her right pant leg is a little short and awkward-looking. But when all is said and done, it'll make sense, I promise.

2. Fill the pants with whatever shade you want them to be. Xandorra's Palace has some nice jeans palattes, or you can use mine (provided below).

I used my own palatte for this tutorial (modeled after the ones at Xandorra's Palace), and chose the third color as my fill.

3. Add your darkest shadows, using the number 2 section of the palatte. Don't go overboard with this, or the pants will come out too dark.

You can see I shadowed where her pockets crease, and where her jeans crease between her legs. I added very slight shading to her knees and the folds at her ankles.

This is where I shade the edges of her pants too, where they meet her hips, where the crease in the zipper flap is, and the bottom of her pants.

4. Now you're going to add your first set of highlights. Using color number 4 of your palatte, shade the middle of her thighs, and a very small portion of her calves. You can add some highlights to her pockets, and to the waistline of her jeans too.

Add very gently to the tops of folds/creases at her ankles and knees.

5. Okay, now for more highlights. Be careful with this, if you add too many the jeans just look really bright. I'm going for a faded look here.

Just add a stripe using color number 5 in the center of your first set of highlights (the ones you just finished). And make sure to add some random dots around your highlights too. This gives the effect of the rough texture of jeans.

This step and the next are pretty much the same.

6. Finally, one more round of highlights. Now you really need to be gentle. For this step, only add color number 6 on top of color number 5. Be sure to leave some of 5 showing, otherwise, what was the point of using that color at all?

Again, make sure to add some random dots around your highlights too. This gives the effect of the rough texture of jeans.

Now, you should have one finished pair of pants.
