PIXEL HAIR TUTORIAL
sometimes i get a little crazy and pixel shade hair.
just do me a favor and don't steal my lineart and my shading. the purpose of a tutorial is to teach someone else how to improve their OWN skills, if you just steal mine, what have you learned?
base for this tutorial by e-candy.

1. Start with the lineart for the hair. After you've got a rough line, make sure you clean it up. You can see I've already cleaned up the hair here. This makes the hair look less rough. It's okay if it doesn't look perfect, hair isn't perfect. This one was designed to be fixed and cartoony, but you can try any style that suits you. |

2. Fill your hair outline with whatever shade you want. For this tutorial I used the red section of this bright palette by Duckie.
Fill with the fourth color of whatever palette you choose. |

3. Now add your shadows, adding the part of her hair, the strands that overlap one another, and making sure to shade behind her ears and head. If you're having trouble deciding how the shadows should flow, look at a few strands of your own hair. |

4. Now you're going to add another set of shadows. Using the third color of your palette, shade around the dark areas you just finished. This makes the hair look more natural. This is more of a filler step, to make the hair smooth and still full - follow the outline of the hair, and the way it flows. |

5. Okay, now for highlights. Be careful with this, if you add too many the hair will just look overwhelmingly bright, and unrealistic. This really just takes practice. I always shade in a circular motion at the top of the head. I curve around the left side at an upward angle, and repeat for the right. For the bottom of the hair, I just do a streak across. IMPORTANT! ONLY add highlights where you can still see your fill color! |

6. This is where I would normally add loose strands of hair. Around the part area, and around the edges. But this doll was made to look "perfect." Now's also the time to add any accesories you want in the hair, and make sure to shadow around them. As you can see I've added a headband and shadowed in front of it so it looks like it is pressing into her hair. |
